- WP1. Coordination and consultancy
CLARIAH-VL is directed by the supervisor-spokesperson and guided by the Project Management Board.. The CLARIAH-VL Steering Committee, constituted by each of the co-supervisors at each university plus the co-supervisors of each of the third parties meets at least once a year to provide advice and guidance for the project. The day-to-day work of the project is undertaken by the CLARIAH-VL coordinators based in the Digital Humanities Research Centres at the universities of Antwerp, Brussels, Ghent and Leuven. Liaison with CLARIN is coordinated through the INT. The CLARIAH-VL Coordinator is responsible for the day-to-day management of the project including liaison with and reporting to the FWO.
Also, a professional approach to internal and external communications is crucial for the success of the project. High visibility of the achievements of the research infrastructure, both for arts, humanities and social science researchers and non-scientific audiences as well as external stakeholders, such as funding agencies, is critical. The focus of the CLARIAH-VL communication is to communicate the CLARIAH-VL activities, results and other DH-related news from each of the Flemish partner institutions to the our key stakeholder communities Digital Humanists (DARIAH) and Computational Linguists (CLARIN) researchers, Arts and Humanities researchers more generally, and the public.
- WP 2: Public Humanities and user involvement
In this work package existing and potential audiences and user bases are identified and addressed. This includes the engagement and interaction with non-scientific audiences. The needs of different audiences will be examined in view of developing, encouraging and advising citizen science initiatives. Expertise and best practices regarding public participation in humanities research will be aggregated with special attention for the complementary role of cultural heritage institutions as a sustainable intermediary in the circulation and creation of knowledge and in promoting scientific awareness with the general public.
Additionally, this work package focuses on user involvement for each of the focus areas of this project. User involvement is required throughout the process of constructing, assessing and validating infrastructures and services. Basic introductions to digital methods are essential to broaden the user base of CLARIAH-VL and to equip humanities researchers that do not use digital research methods or adhere to interoperability standards and equip them with needed skills. In order to coordinate needs assessments and interact with users during development phases user groups need to be defined within each of the focus areas.
- WP 3: Corpus Building, Management and Access to Resources
In this work package an expert knowledge base and working group on interoperability and annotation will be created. This working group will establish transparent and trusted management workflows and policies that take issues of authorization and authentication into account. The CLARIAH-VL consortium will also advocate for the provision of a range of access possibilities by data providers and cultural heritage institutions (e.g., APIs, search interfaces, bulk download options, LOD) to encourage the widest uptake and usage of digital resources as possible.
- WP 4: Automated Analysis and Annotation
Flanders is quickly accumulating a critical expertise in the fields of machine learning and artificial intelligence, that will be developed further in this work package. An expert knowledge base and working group will be established by bringing together specialists from CLARIAH-VL affiliated services and projects and external state-of-the-art-defining networks (e.g., IMPACT Centre of Competence for digitisation and Transkribus/READ for HTR) and collaborate closely with the VSC for enhanced expert knowledge on, and practical use of supercomputing.
- WP 5: Open science tools, reference services and linked open data
In this work package an expert knowledge base and working group on interoperable ontologies and LOD strategies will be created. We will, amongst others, explore and document the use of the Triple Pattern Fragments interface. By providing more intelligent clients, which take on part of the workload, less complex queries need to be answered by the server. This results in a much more scalable solution where the servers receive less load and can become more reliable. Integration and complementarity with Wikidata efforts and the powerful Wikidata SPARQL endpoint in particular will be studied with regard to metadata development and easy-to-use multilingual thesaurus building tools. Furthermore, linked open data reference services and expert knowledge base will be created on LOD controlled vocabularies and standard ontologies. The LOD reference services and related expert knowledge base that will be established in CLARIAH-VL concentrates mainly on geodata and aims to improve semantic interoperability between digital humanities datasets produced by Flemish universities, with other major linked open data research infrastructures and data services within Europe. In this work package, we will also test the CLARIAH-NL Timbuctoo installation with Flemish and Belgian data including Triple Pattern Fragments technologies. Finally, this work package also includes the development of an advanced network tool for social network analysis and visualization.
- WP6: High Performance and Cloud Computing & Trusted Data Repositories
This work package targets access and usage of the services of the Flemish Supercomputer Center (VSC) by arts, humanities and social science researchers. This access will focus on three specific service areas: a) computing , ‘traditional’ supercomputing where large computing clusters are used to perform large, parallelizable or computationally heavy tasks; b) cloud infrastructure, providing a flexible and more user-friendly interactive user interface for data analysis as well as a gateway to the data and results from the computing cluster; and c) storage , providing easy access to large collaborative datasets and longer-term repository storage.
Organised through a number of pilots, we will establish a workflow to support these researchers in using the supercomputer for their research. If possible, at least one pilot will be selected for each service area. This workflow will be supplemented by specifically targeted workshops and training sessions. In the medium to long-term this will be developed into an exploitation plan that aims to increase the uptake and optimise the use of supercomputing services by arts, humanities and social sciences researchers in Flanders.
